The Thinker: Jacob Holtz

"Throughout school, myself and others most rely on our family for help. Personally, I consider my friends and teammates family. With my immediate family and sports family both on my side, my education I know is on track. Knowing if I fail or mess up, I always have a teammate or a real family member to fall back on." - Jacob Holtz-Surloff

Experience:   4 Years      Grade:       12      GPA:   3.5

Favorite Subject:
My favorite subjects of study would definitely be any of the social sciences. Psychology and Philosophy are my top two because they both deal with mindsets and variations of beliefs and possible facts between a whole society. Understanding how one thinks and what they believe inwill always interest me.

Who do you look up to?
Of course I look up to each of my parents and my siblings, though my immediate family are not the only ones who inspire me. On person I will continue to look up to is Jordan Belfort, or best known as the Wolf of Wall Street. Despite his guilty convictions and other past events, he will always be one of the most intelligent men in my eyes since he understood the economy and stock markets completely. Jordan is a self-proclaimed multi-billionaire, but he is also my inspiration to strive and continue growing.

What five-words best describe you?
Charismatic. Reliable. Authentic. Adaptable. Focused.

Favorite Professional Athlete:
Out of any athlete from the variety of sports, Justin Tuck, a currently-retired NFL player tops them all. With motivating words and fundraisers throughout his career and still continuing, he always looks and wants best for his community before anything else. He maintains relationships with all types of people and I find that this is a great athlete, nonetheless, a greater person.

Plans after high school:
After high school, with my AA-degree, I plan to attend a university and major in Criminology and possibly Psychology. With this, I aspire to join a criminal justice-related field, such as becoming an FBI Special Agent.

Why are high school athletics an important part of a students education?
As a veteran to the title of a "Student-Athlete", I find throughout my education and even life, athletics have always kept me on a positive track for a great future. Within many sports, one thing in common with each is the discipline. Each athlete can agree, that despite each trial and tribulation, you stay orderly and respectful knowing someone is always watching. Along with the discipline is the family-feel. My coaches are like parental figures and my teammates are like my siblings. Each and every one of them keeps me on track in school, on the field or the mat, and even in my community.

Why is family involvement an important part of education?
Throughout school, myself and others most rely on our family for help. Personally, I consider my friends and teammates family. With my immediate family and sports family both on my side, my education I know is on track. Knowing if I fail or mess up, I always have a teammate or a real family member to fall back on.

What has been the highlight of your playing high school sports?
In my many sports in high school, precious moments have arisen. One moment that will be forever memorable is making it to Regionals my Sophomore year at the 160-pound weight class. Yet, it wasn't a great placing at only 4th place, though the feeling it having my hand raised and being told I was moving on to the next stage really excited me and pumped me in continuing the sport.
